Sleep Apnea

Funny mature man with beautiful smileDid you know that Dr. Wurtzel can help you or your significant other stop snoring? If you or your significant other snore frequently, especially with long pauses in breathing or gasps for breath, this could be a sign that you may be suffering from sleep apnea.

What is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a disorder that affects the way you breathe while you sleep. While a patient with sleep apnea is asleep, the muscles in their throat relax too much and cause the airway to collapse and momentarily cut off oxygen. After the airway has collapsed, the brain responds by waking up the patient just enough to re-adjust their position and re-open the airway. This cycle can continue throughout the entire night and cause patients to wake up hundreds of times without realizing it.

Some symptoms of sleep apnea include:

  • Loud snoring characterized by the cessation of breath
  • Feeling tired throughout the day even if you should have gotten a full night’s rest
  • Lethargy
  • Headaches when you wake up
  • Attention problems

30Patients who are over forty or overweight are at higher risk for sleep apnea. If you have a larger neck or tongue, or a smaller jawbone, this could also increase your risk. Sleep apnea is treatable, and we recommend seeking diagnosis and treatment as soon as possible. If left untreated sleep apnea has been linked to high blood pressure, diabetes, heart failure, stroke, depression, and other serious health problems.
