Root Canals

Smiling beautiful young womanWhen the nerve of a tooth becomes decayed or infected, root canal therapy may be required to restore the tooth. Root canal therapy, or a root canal, is a procedure that removes infection from a severely decayed tooth and preserves the tooth’s remaining tooth structure. Before root canal therapy was available, teeth that became severely decayed had to be extracted. With root canal therapy, patients can keep their natural smile even longer.

There are a few reasons a root canal may be required. These include:

  • Trauma or injury to the tooth
  • The development of a severe abscess or infection
  • Tooth pulp decay

The Benefits of a Root Canal

  • Root canals allow us to save teeth even if they would normally require extraction.
  • A root canal prevents tooth infection from spreading to other teeth.
  • Root canals will also prevent tooth infection from reaching the bloodstream.
  • With root canal therapy, patients can find relief for their tooth infection symptoms. A root canal will alleviate your toothache and help you feel comfortable again.
  • Each root canal is capped with a beautiful porcelain crown. No one will even be able to tell that you’ve had a root canal.

Procedure

  • Root canal procedures will usually require more than one visit to our dental office. Using special instruments, the dentist will begin by cleaning out your tooth infection and removing any infected tissue. Once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, we will medicate the tooth and seal it with a filling.
  • During your next appointment, we will finish the root canal procedure and cap the tooth with a beautiful, custom-made porcelain crown. This will protect the tooth, prevent further breakage, and restore full functionality.
  • After your root canal, your dentist will give you some care and instructions regarding how you can maintain health and function to your tooth, and some recommendations on how to care for your tooth during the healing process.
